Kent, WA – May 2025 — The Kent Black Action Commission (KBAC) is proud to announce its annual Juneteenth Celebration, set to take place on Saturday, June 21, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Morrill Meadows Park in Kent, Washington. This highly anticipated, family-friendly event will offer a full day of free entertainment, cultural performances, and community unity to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
Juneteenth, recognized nationally as a federal holiday since 2021, marks June 19, 1865—the historic day when enslaved individuals in Texas learned of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. KBAC’s annual celebration in Kent honors this legacy with vibrant cultural programming designed to educate, uplift, and engage the entire community.
This year’s theme, “Freedom Through Culture and Community,” emphasizes the importance of coming together to celebrate Black history, resilience, and contributions to American society.

Event Highlights:
- Live Musical Performances: Enjoy an electrifying performance by renowned jazz guitarist Michael Powers, whose soulful sounds have captivated audiences across the nation. The lineup also features local Hip Hop artists, spoken word performers, and gospel singers representing the diverse voices of the African American community.
- Cultural Dance & Poetry: Attendees will be treated to traditional African and Afro-Caribbean dance presentations, as well as powerful poetic tributes that speak to the journey from slavery to liberation.
- Free Cultural Food: Guests will be able to enjoy a variety of complimentary soul food and international dishes, offering a true taste of African American heritage and global Black cultures.
- Family-Friendly Activities: With entertainment for all ages, the event will include interactive cultural exhibits, youth crafts, community resource booths, and storytelling sessions celebrating Black history.
“We are excited to return with an even bigger celebration this year,” said Gwen Allen-Carston, Executive Director of KBAC. “Juneteenth is not only a time of remembrance, but also a call to continue the work of equity and empowerment. We invite everyone in Kent and the surrounding communities to join us in celebrating freedom, culture, and unity.”
KBAC’s Juneteenth Celebration has become a cornerstone event in South King County, drawing support from community organizations, local businesses, and civic leaders. The 2025 event at Morrill Meadows Park is expected to be one of the largest to date.
Admission is free and open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, picnic blankets, and their families for a day of celebration and togetherness.
