Honoring a Legacy: Proposal to Rename a Portion of Benson Road/Highway as MLK Jr. Way

The Kent and Renton communities are exploring a historic proposal to honor the life, leadership, and lasting impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. through the Memorial Renaming of a significant portion of Benson Road/Highway. This initiative seeks to preserve and uplift Dr. King’s legacy in a meaningful way that reflects the values of unity, justice, and equality across South King County.

The proposed renaming would designate the corridor:
From North Benson Road and Petrovitsky Road in Renton, extending south through the City of Kent, and ending at 256th Street,
as Martin Luther King Jr. Way.

This location is both symbolic and practical it is a major connecting route between diverse neighborhoods, local businesses, and community hubs. Naming this stretch of roadway after Dr. King provides a powerful visual reminder of his commitment to community empowerment, inclusive progress, and social transformation.

Inspired by State Recognition and Community Vision

This proposal builds on the foundation laid by the Washington State House Joint Memorial (HJM) 4000, which formally recognizes the tremendous contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and encourages local communities to engage in acts of remembrance. HJM 4000 calls upon Washingtonians to uplift Dr. King’s lifelong pursuit of justice, dignity, and equality for all.

The Kent and Renton renaming effort follows that spirit by advancing a community-led gesture of respect and reflection. The initiative highlights the collective desire to honor a leader whose influence continues to shape civil rights, human rights, and the pursuit of justice values that remain as essential today as ever.

A Step Toward Shared Identity and Progress

Memorializing this roadway as Martin Luther King Jr. Way would not only celebrate his legacy, but also reinforce the identity of Kent and Renton as communities committed to equity and meaningful change. It serves as both a tribute and a promise a reminder of how far we have come, and how much further we must go in the ongoing work for equality and opportunity.

For the Kent Black Action Commission, which has long advocated for community uplift, cultural visibility, and civic engagement, this initiative aligns with our mission to create a more informed, connected, and empowered community.

Moving Forward Together

As conversations progress, community members, stakeholders, local leaders, and organizations across both cities are encouraged to participate, share their voices, and help shape this important recognition.

Renaming this portion of Benson Road/Highway stands as a meaningful step toward honoring Dr. King’s enduring legacy a legacy rooted in courage, justice, unity, and hope.
