Kent Black Action Commission Commemorates Freedom with Juneteenth Celebration

The Kent Black Action Commission (KBAC) proudly hosted the annual Juneteenth Celebration in Kent, Washington, bringing the community together in a vibrant tribute to freedom, resilience, and African American culture. Held at Morrill Meadows Park, the event drew hundreds of residents from across South King County for a full day of education, reflection, music, and unity.

Juneteenth, recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, commemorates June 19, 1865, the day when the last enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned of their emancipation — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. The day has since become a national symbol of African American liberation and cultural heritage.

Organized under the theme “Honoring Our Legacy, Celebrating Our Freedom,” this year’s celebration featured powerful speeches, community performances, youth showcases, and a curated vendor marketplace highlighting Black-owned businesses, food vendors, and local artisans.

Gwen Allen-Carston, Executive Director of KBAC, opened the program with a compelling message about the importance of remembering the past while building toward a just and equitable future. “Juneteenth is not just a celebration of freedom — it is a reminder of the long and unfinished work of justice,” Allen-Carston said. “We honor our ancestors by empowering our present and shaping a better tomorrow for the next generation.”

The day’s program included performances by local gospel choirs, spoken word artists, African drumming ensembles, and youth dancers. A keynote address was delivered by Mayor Dana Ralph, who spoke about the significance of Juneteenth in Washington State and the vital role of education in preserving African American history.

Children enjoyed hands-on crafts, storytelling circles, and an interactive history walk-through display, while adults engaged in wellness activities, voter registration booths, and community resource stations offering information on housing, healthcare, and education.

The Kent Juneteenth Celebration continues to grow each year, thanks to strong community partnerships, local sponsorships, and the dedication of KBAC volunteers. The event exemplifies KBAC’s mission to build inclusive community spaces, promote Black cultural excellence, and drive forward civic participation in South King County.
