Every February, the Kent Black Action Commission (KBAC), in partnership with local organizations, brings community members to the Washington State Capitol in Olympia for Black Legislative Day. This annual event provides an invaluable opportunity for participants to meet with elected officials, advocate for key issues, and engage in meaningful dialogue about policies that impact Black communities across the state.
For several years now, KBAC has coordinated transportation to the Capitol, ensuring that voices from King County and beyond are represented. The initiative is designed to give community members direct access to the legislative process and foster stronger relationships with state leaders. By creating these opportunities for face-to-face interactions, KBAC aims to ensure that the concerns of the Black community are heard and addressed by policymakers.
A highlight of the day is the participation of youth, who are given a platform to ask questions and share their perspectives on issues that affect their generation. From education and housing to social justice, the youth are encouraged to voice their concerns and engage with lawmakers in meaningful discussions about the future.
“We want to make sure our community has a direct line to their elected officials and that they feel empowered to speak up about the issues that matter most to them,” said Gwen Allen-Carston, a KBAC representative. “This day allows us to collectively advocate for change and ensure that our community’s needs are a priority at the state level.”
Governor Jay Inslee has consistently met with KBAC during Black Legislative Day, along with several state senators and congress members who support the community’s efforts. These meetings provide an open forum for discussing critical topics such as racial equity, economic development, education reform, and criminal justice. The consistent engagement from state leaders, including Governor Inslee, reflects a commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Black Washingtonians.
The event has become a cornerstone of KBAC’s advocacy work, bringing together community members, leaders, and youth to participate in the democratic process. It reinforces the importance of civic engagement and demonstrates the power of collective action in bringing about legislative change.
As KBAC continues to build on the success of Black Legislative Day, the organization remains focused on its mission to advocate for equity and create lasting change through community involvement and partnerships with elected officials. With the ongoing support of leaders like Governor Inslee and state legislators, KBAC is determined to keep elevating the voices of the community at the state Capitol for years to come.
